Summer recreation isn’t just for kids.
For the first time, the Pine Parks and Recreation Department is offering sports leagues for grown-ups, with soccer, softball, flag football and sand volleyball starting in June.
“The adult space is an interesting one, particularly to be able to offer this level of programming,” recreation program manager Tyler Walker said at the April 3 meeting of township supervisors.
He announced a newly signed contract with Sports Monster Pittsburgh, the local arm of a 30-year-old national company that focuses on providing well-run leagues, tournaments and events.
The co-ed program is open to athletes 19 and older, who can register as a team or on an individual basis for placement on teams, according to Walker. Available are:
• Soccer, 6 to 9 p.m. Sundays, June 9 through Aug. 18. Register at pittsburghmonster.leaguelab.com/sport/Soccer.
• Softball, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Mondays or 9 a.m. to noon Sundays, June through August. Register at pittsburghmonster.leaguelab.com/sport/Softball.
• Flag football, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, June 1 through Aug. 10. Register at pittsburghmonster.leaguelab.com/leagues?sport=Flag%20Football.
• Sand volleyball, 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, June 1 through Aug. 10. Register at pittsburghmonster.leaguelab.com/sport/Sand_Volleyball.
For youngsters, another first-time parks and recreation offering is a 10-week Summer Activity Camp, starting June 10 and wrapping up Aug. 16. Campers who will be entering first through sixth grades can enroll for half-day or full-day sessions.
The camp includes field trips to destinations such as the National Aviary and Carnegie Museum of Science, and weekly “fun programs” such as visits from Allegheny County park rangers, a magician and more. Visit www.twp.pine.pa.us/507/Summer-Activity-Camp-2024.
For the same age group, the township’s traditional summer recreation program runs for eight weeks, from 9 a.m. to noon June 10 through Aug. 2 near the Finley Pavilion in Pine Community Park, near the Pearce Mill Road entrance.
