The Philip Murray Bridge will be closed for a weekend for construction, the Allegheny County Public Works department said in a release.
The bridge, also known as the 10th Street Bridge, will be closed from 7 p.m. Sept. 6 through 6 a.m. Sept. 9 so it can be milled and paved.
The bridge spans the Monongahela River and connects Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood to the South Side. Motorists will be detoured over the nearby Birmingham Bridge.
About 18,000 vehicles use the 1,275-foot-long bridge each day, according to public works department spokesman Brent Wasko. The bridge is the only conventional suspension bridge in Pennsylvania. It opened in 1933.
Coraopolis-based American Bridge Co. will do the work, which is part of a $21 million project funded by the state and Federal Highway Administration.
The project initially removed “dino geese” that were painted by Polish Hill artist Tim Kaulen atop the arch about two decades ago. Kaulen was allowed to repaint the figures on the bridge after a public outcry.
