Three more people have died due to influenza complications in Allegheny County, bringing the total number of such deaths to 10, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.

The residents were in their late 90s, late 80s and mid-70s. All had underlying conditions, the health department said.

“Weekly flu cases thus far in 2020 are lower than what we were seeing in late 2019, but flu activity remains high across Allegheny County and Pennsylvania,” the health department posted to its Facebook page.

The 2019-20 flu season has surpassed the 2018-19 flu season in terms of the total number of county residents who suffered from the flu and flu-related deaths, health department figures show.

Only three Allegheny County residents died from the flu during the 2018-19 flu season, compared to 10 that have already died during the 2019-20 flu season.

Roughly 7,600 more people contracted the flu during the 2019-20 flu season than during the 2018-19 flu season, the health department said. More than 100 people were hospitalized due to the flu during the 2019-20 flu season compared to 61 during the 2018-19 flu season.

To stop the spread of the flu, the health department advised people to practice good hygiene techniques, see a doctor if they’re experiencing flu symptoms and get a flu shot.
