It’s the first weekend of fall and the final weekend of September — which means the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race is here. If you aren’t one of the thousands running, there are still plenty of things to do.

Go for a run

The 42nd annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race is Sunday. The event started in 1977, when the late Mayor Caliguiri established the race as a “community fun run.” Since that inaugural competition, 250,000 people have participated in the Great Race, making the event the largest 10K race in Pennsylvania.

It also includes a 5K run/walk, a running clinic, the Junior Great Race, and the Great Race Expo. The 10K runners start in Frick Park at Beechwood Boulevard. The 5K participants begin at Fifth Avenue and Atwood Street in Oakland. Both end at Point State Park, Downtown. Be aware of road closures.

Crawling along

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Fall Gallery Crawl is Friday. The quarterly event showcases the city’s Cultural District where there will be more than 30 stops at indoor and outdoor locations as well as public art places.

Highlights include visual arts such as “Boat Trip,” which investigates recent artist projects, installations and videos related to the fast-disappearing Arctic Circle. At SPACE, there’s Mutant Media, an exhibition of American artists.

Social Status is an exhibition showcasing multimedia by artists centered on fashion as art and curated by Tyler Calpin, a Pittsburgh-based photographer and Point Park University graduate.

Pour it on

The annual Steel City Big Pour — a beer, food, art and music festival — returns this weekend with new times. The event offers an opportunity to sample varieties of craft beer and food on Saturday at Construction Junction in Pittsburgh’s East End.

Some of the brewers include All Saints Brewing Co., Cinderlands Beer Co., East End Brewing, Flying Dog, Hitchhiker Brewing Co., Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery Pittsburgh and Yards Brewing Co. The first session is 1 to 4 p.m. and session two is 6 to 9 p.m. The event raises money for Construction Junction, a recycling center and nonprofit retailer of surplus building materials and furniture.

Worldly

This is the final Friday for the “World Square” celebration in Market Square, Downtown. The square will be full of sights, sounds and tastes of the international and immigrant communities of Pittsburgh. Attendees can shop, taste a variety of foods and listen to international forms of music.

It’s part of Mayor Bill Peduto’s partnership with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership for the free event, designed to “cultivate a spirit of inclusivity and provide exposure in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh.”

Oktoberfest in September

Drink up at Oktoberfest at Penn Brewery on Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Enjoy the brewery’s German beers, including one made specifically for Oktoberfest. It’s a rich, copper-colored Munich-style fest beer, malty and medium-bodied. Dine on pretzels, sausages, rotisserie-style chicken and gingerbread.
