Allegheny County’s number of new coronavirus cases dropped back into double digits on Wednesday, but there was an uptick in hospitalizations and deaths.
The county’s health department reported 70 new cases, nine hospitalizations and five deaths.
Since the first cases were reported in March, Allegheny County has seen 8,512 cases, 701 hospitalizations and 248 deaths.
The five new deaths were reported to be individuals in their 80s and 90s, with dates of death ranging from July 25 to Aug. 1. People 70 and older have accounted for the majority of the county’s deaths.

Allegheny County’s death total of 248 differs from the state’s total of 239. The discrepancy has been attributed to different reporting methods between the state and county.
Allegheny County data indicates 120,301 individuals have been tested, with 8,512 positive cases for a positivity rate of 7.08%.
The county cases have been spread out among people of all ages:
- 0-9 — 202 cases (2.4%)
- 10-19 — 578 (6.8%)
- 20-29 — 2,275 (26.7%)
- 30-39 — 1,363 (16%)
- 40-49 — 961 (11.3%)
- 50-59 — 1,129 (13.3%)
- 60-69 — 837 (9.8%)
- 70+ — 1,167 (13.7)
The new numbers were identified in tests done between July 15 and Aug. 4. The new cases affected people ranging in age from 11 months to 94 years, with a median age of 42. Of the new cases, 68 are confirmed and two probable.
Of the 701 past and present hospitalizations, 209 were admitted to the ICU and 87 required ventilators.
