The Allegheny Intermediate Unit on Monday night named North Allegheny School District Superintendent Robert Scherrer to lead the agency beginning July 20.

Officials said Scherrer will bring a diverse background in the classroom and administration at local school districts to his new post as AIU executive director. Prior to his current assignment, he served as North Allegheny’s acting superintendent and assistant superintendent for K-12 education. He has held leadership positions at a number of local schools, including the Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy and Allderdice High School within Pittsburgh Public Schools; Woodland Hills School District; Peters Township School District; and the Baldwin-Whitehall School District.

“The board is thrilled to have landed Dr. Scherrer, and we are very excited to bring him into the organization,” AIU board President Debbie Beale said, announcing the appointment. “With his broad and diverse leadership and educational experiences, a demonstrated passion for students and families and a thorough understanding of our region, we believe Dr. Scherrer is an excellent fit for the AIU.”
