Authorities are investigating substancesin a package left in Mt. Lebanon over the weekend by three men who participated in the protest in Downtown Pittsburgh, police said.

Mt. Lebanon police said they received a call around 7:30 p.m. Saturday from a resident who reported seeing someone leave a vehicle and place a box in the woods.

Police said the package contained black painted golf balls, various liquids in containers and light bulbs with the bases missing that had been filled with a liquid and stuffed with paper. Concerned that the devices might be incendiary, police said they called the Allegheny County Bomb Squad.

Police said a preliminary determination was made that the devices were not incendiary and there was no threat to the public, but the bomb squad is investigating the substances.

Peaceful protests in Pittsburgh over the death of George Floyd following an arrest in Minneapolis turned violent on Saturday, resulting in widespread damage to businesses and nearly four dozen arrests. Police said the three men who had left the suspicious package in Mt. Lebanon after participating in the protests are in their early 20s.

Police said an investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information on the package is asked to call the Mt. Lebanon Police Department by dialing 911.
