Two people died in an apparent murder-suicide early Monday in Pittsburgh’s Hays neighborhood, police said.
Officers responded to a duplex in the 700 block of Baldwin Road at about 1:40 a.m. after a report of a man barricaded inside a home with a possible hostage.
A third man inside the home was able to escape and alert police.
Officers on the scene negotiated with the suspect but he refused to come out, public safety spokesman Chris Togneri said.
SWAT was called and Baldwin Road was closed.
Officers were able to get inside the home and found a woman, later identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office as Cindy Woods, 58, dead from a gunshot.
Togneri said officers then retreated and shot numerous rounds of gas into the house when the suspect did not comply with orders to come out.
Officers got inside the home again at 5:40 a.m. and found the man, identified as Douglas A. Woods, 41, dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Baldwin Road reopened at about 11:45 a.m. between Streets Run and Celera Street after being closed most of the morning.
