Police are searching for the suspects involved in a gunfight in Homestead on Friday afternoon in which a 16-year-old boy was shot.

The victim was treated for a gunshot wound to the right leg, which was not life-threatening, according to Allegheny County Police. Medics took the victim to a nearby hospital, where he had been reported in stable condition earlier Friday. Police did not release the victim’s identity.

The shooters were traveling in a white sport utility vehicle on East 16th Avenue, toward West Street at about 2:30 p.m., when someone inside the SUV shot at the victim — who returned the gunfire.

Both the boy who was shot and the SUV fled the scene, where multiple spent bullet shells and a handgun were recovered. Police didn’t say whether the handgun was the victim’s.

County police said the boy will be charged as a juvenile with possession of a firearm by a minor, another gun violation, recklessly endangering another person and issuing false reports.

County detectives are assisting Homestead Police in the investigation.
