A natural gas flare appears from a fracking well in Chartiers Township, Washington County.

Chevron Appalachia informed Pennsylvania it will begin layoffs at its regional headquarters in Moon.

The layoffs, beginning April 6 and continuing through the end of the year, will affect 288 employees, according to a WARN notice filed with the state Department of Labor & Industry.

The layoffs at the 700 Cherrington Parkway regional headquarters are due to closure, according to the notice. Chevron also has a regional office in Mt. Braddock, Fayette County.

The layoffs come as a result of Chevron’s previously-announced divestment from the Appalachian basin and the impending sale of its assets in the Pittsburgh region. The California-based company said in December that it was refocusing its domestic efforts on the Permian basin, in Texas and surrounding states, and deep water sites in the Gulf of Mexico.

“(Chevron) will reduce funding to various gas-related opportunities including Appalachia shale…,” the company said.

Analysts blame the continuing low-prices for natural gas for decisions by Chevron and other oil and gas producers to divest or scale back operations in the Marcellus shale.

Speaking at the Shale Insight 2017 conference in Pittsburgh, Chevron Appalachia President Stacey Olson said Marcellus gas was being sold at a significant discount to other markets, resulting in little or no return for energy producers.

“Chevron Appalachia has been operating at a minimum activity level for two years,” Olson said in 2017.
