Pittsburgh safety project to address speeding in Mt. Washington

Pittsburgh advised motorists to expect lane restrictions and possible delays on Woodruff and Merrimac streets in Mt. Washington as the city completes a four-week safety improvement project.

Pittsburgh is doing $80,000 worth of work at the intersection of Woodruff and Merrimac streets in Mt. Washington after finding that most drivers speed along the streets.

The city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure collected traffic speed and volume data in 2018 and found that 94% of drivers on Woodruff and 81% on Merrimac exceeded the posted 25 mph speed limit.

Pittsburgh’s Ream Park and Swimming Pool are located at the intersection.

Work started Monday on building a new pedestrian island on Woodruff Street, improving an existing traffic island at the intersection and laying down new crosswalks across Woodruff and Merrimac streets at the intersection, according to the city.

The project is expected to take four weeks. The city advised motorists to expect lane restrictions and possible traffic delays.
