Dozen residents displaced by fire at Penn Hills apartment complex

The Red Cross is assisting residents of a Penn Hills apartment complex who were displaced Thursday morning by a fire that caused heavy damage to the building, according to authorities.
Firefighters responding to the 100 block of Penn Pleasant Drive shortly after 1:30 a.m. encountered heavy smoke and flames shooting from the first and second floors and the front of the building, according to emergency dispatchers.
All occupants of the building escaped. One person was treated for smoke inhalation, according to authorities.
The fire displaced 12 people and a number of pets.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of a basement apartment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
