A construction project along East Carson Street aimed at improving safety is scheduled to start in April.

Crews are conducting preparatory work this week to get ready for the project, PennDOT announced Monday.

The $16.31 million project targets a 2.5-mile stretch of East Carson Street in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood. Improvements will include milling and resurfacing, signage and signal upgrades, concrete patching, drainage, guardrail replacement, installing handicapped accessible ramps, curb and sidewalk improvements, pavement markings and other construction. There also will be pedestrian enhancements such as high visibility crosswalks and countdown signals, PennDOT said.

When construction begins in April, PennDOT expects lane restrictions during off-peak, overnight and weekend hours. The project should be finished by Spring 2022.
