Kraft Heinz produced a special, collectible, gold Heinz pickle pin that will be handed out at Picklesburgh this year.

A free, special-edition golden pickle pin will be handed out at this year’s Picklesburgh festival to celebrate Kraft Heinz’s 150th anniversary, the company announced Thursday.

“Nothing is more representative of Pittsburgh’s proud pickle past than the cherished pickle pin,” said Jeremy Waldrup, CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, the nonprofit that presents Picklesburgh.

The regular pickle pin has been a keepsake and collector’s item since the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and is known as “one of the most famous giveaways in history,” officials said.

“The pin was so popular that it created a riot-like situation at the event as fair-goers clamored for this unique trinket,” the company said.

It will be distributed during the July 26-28 festival in Downtown Pittsburgh from the Kraft Heinz booth located under a giant inflatable pickle on the Roberto Clemente Bridge. People in the booth also will hand out samples of Klavon’s pickle-flavored ice cream on July 27.

“We can’t think of a better way or place for Kraft Heinz to release this limited-edition commemorative pin than at the 2019 Picklesburgh festival, where pickle-lovers from near and far will be on hand to celebrate all things pickled,” Waldrup said.

Kraft Heinz said the pin has stayed true to the original design throughout the years, but the golden edition has been made to celebrate the 150-year milestone.

Picklesburgh will be open from noon to 10 p.m. July 26 and July 27 and from noon to 6 p.m. July 28. Admission is free.

It will feature more than 60 vendors that represent unique pickle-themed food and merchandise. There will also be 18 bands performing on the main stage and a pickle-juice drinking contest.

Earlier this year, Picklesburgh was chosen as the No. 1 best specialty food festival in America in a USA Today reader poll.
