A pipe burst inside Kennywood Park on Wednesday, sending crews scrambling to get the amusement park ready in time for Thursday night’s Holiday Lights events.
“While Santa visited our homes on Christmas Day, it appears the Grinch stopped by the park,” Kennywood said in a Facebook post. “A water main break was discovered Christmas evening, which has led to a whole lot of work for our plumbing and maintenance teams.”
The park opened as scheduled at 5 p.m., but officials warned guests that food stands and restrooms inside the park might not open until after 6 p.m. Guests can instead use restrooms at the park’s entrance.
Workers were continuing to do repairs and clean up the affected area as the park opened, with a small section of the park closed off near the Garden Stage and Auto Race.
The Penny Arcade train display, Thomas Town gift shop and Parkside Cafe will remain closed until water service gets fully restored, Kennywood said.
Kennywood’s seasonal showcase includes nearly 2 million lights, Pennsylvania’s tallest Christmas tree at 100 feet and the new “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer 4D Experience.” Most of the West Mifflin park’s family and children’s rides are open and decorated in the spirit of the season, including Thomas Town, based on characters from the children’s TV show.
The nightly spectacle runs 5 to 9 p.m. through Monday.
