The line seems to be getting longer every week at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The organization on Monday held its fifth drive-up food distribution at its headquarters in Duquesne, serving 861 vehicles in three hours. About a half-hour before the noon start, vehicles were backed up onto Route 837. Several police officers were directing traffic at two intersections.

People talked, checked their phones and waited in the sunshine as hundreds of vehicles queued up in a double row to collect what the organization calls a single food share, or two boxes.

Recipients were not permitted to leave their cars except to use one of the portable toilets spaced along the winding street.

According to the food bank’s website, five distributions using this no-touch approach has served 5,970 vehicles.

The coronavirus pandemic has triggered a 543% increase in people coming to the food bank directly for food, according to the website.
