A short-term closure of the Elizabeth Bridge for cable replacement work will begin at 9 a.m. on June 5, 2020.

Maintenance work will disrupt traffic patterns Friday morning on the Elizabeth Bridge and Pittsburgh’s Liberty Bridge, PennDOT said.

Weather permitting, the Elizabeth Bridge that carries Route 51 across the Monongahela River will close at 9 a.m. so that crews can replace cables. Traffic will be detoured in both directions during the work, which is expected to take about 45 minutes to complete.

Northbound traffic will be detoured via the Elizabeth/Glassport ramp, turning right onto North Third Avenue and following McKeesport Road, Lincoln Boulevard and Glassport-Elizabeth Road. Motorists then will make left turns onto the Clairton-Glassport Bridge and onto North State Street -Route 837 – before entering the ramp toward Elizabeth/Pittsburgh and merging onto Route 51.

Southbound motorists will exit via the ramp to North Route 837, toward Clairton, and will make right turns onto the Clairton-Glassport Bridge and Glassport-Elizabeth Road. They’ll then follow Lincoln Boulevard, McKeesport Road and North Second Avenue before turning left onto Market Street and proceeding straight onto the ramp to Route 51.

Northbound (inbound) traffic on the Liberty Bridge will be restricted to a single lane between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. while crews from Michael Facchiano Contracting perform maintenance and washing operations. Traffic in the outbound lanes won’t be affected.
