A former Ohio resident pleaded guilty in federal court to charges related a fraud scheme, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady announced Thursday. The scheme targeted casinos throughout the East Coast, including some in Western Pennsylvania.
Karl E. Wiley, 64, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and aggravated identity theft.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, Wiley and co-conspirators cashed counterfeit checks at East Coast casinos between May 2014 and October 2017. They used fake ID cards with the names of real people, the DOJ said, at casinos that included Presque Isle in Erie and Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
Wiley is currently locked up in the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh. Sentencing is scheduled for April 24.
