Residents of McKeesport, Port Vue, White Oak and Versailles Borough will remain under a boil water advisory at least for Monday and Tuesday as a precaution against potential microbial contamination, the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County said Sunday evening.
The authority replaced an intake pump Sunday at the McKeesport water treatment plant and crews were in the process of filling up water holding tanks across the system, according to Mike Kukura, the authority’s resident manager.
He said a water conservation order issued on Saturday would be lifted when they are filled.
“The plant is back up and running and we’re filling up those tanks now,” he said. “We’ve still got two consecutive days worth of bacteria tests to do before we can life the boil water order. It will be at least until Tuesday.”
Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport canceled classes Monday due to the advisory, according to a post on their Facebook page. Officials plan on reopening the school Tuesday, but added students should bring their own drinking water.
Residents in the impacted communities should bring the water to boil for one minute and let it cool before using for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation, according to the authority.
Water is available at 238 Atlantic Ave.; the intersections of Walnut and Juniper; Walnut and 12th; and McKeesport Hospital. It’s also available in White Oak at 2280 Lincoln Way and 1612 Lincoln Way.
Port Vue water locations are at 304 Gumbert St. and 1515 Washington Blvd.
Parents of infants and young children and people at increased risk, such as pregnant women, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems, should seek advice from their health care advisors about drinking this water.
