Primanti Bros. and East End Brewing Co. are bringing back their “Almost Famous Pickle Beer” collaboration.

They hope the second serving is as good as the first.

“Last year, it was bonkers how fast it went,” said Scott Smith, owner of East End Brewing in Larimer. “People came to the brewery who we had never seen before, so it helped expand our reach. We had to bring more beer down to the Primanti’s in Market Square for the release because everyone wanted to try it.”

There isn’t a similar event this year because of the covid-19 pandemic. The beer will be available at East End Brewing and Pittsburgh-area Primanti Bros. locations in cans and 4-packs beginning Wednesday.

The beer has barley and hops, and about 600 pounds of fresh local cucumbers peeled by hand, coriander, sea salt, and fresh dill. The newest ingredient is black peppercorn.

“Pickles have a strong Pittsburgh presence,” Smith said. “It really tastes wonderful.”

The original release was planned to coincide with the annual Picklesburgh festival Downtown, once scheduled for July 30 but canceled this year.

Partnering with Primanti Bros. is awesome because it’s truly a Pittsburgh brand, said Smith, who plans to open the patio this weekend for food and drinks.

“I can’t wait to drink one with a Primanti’s sandwich,” he said.

Last year, the brew sold out in less than 48 hours, said Jim Prezioso, senior marketing manager for Primanti Bros.

“With the tweaks, Scott has made it has a savory pickle taste,” Prezioso said. “Last year’s release was so crazy that after an hour we needed more beer.”
