Allegheny Health Network plans to open its new 90,000-square foot AHN Cancer Institute-Allegheny General on Monday morning.

It’s the centerpiece of Highmark and AHN’s $300 million expansion of cancer care throughout Western Pennsylvania, according to an AHN statement. The institute will serve as a hub for Allegheny Health Network’s community cancer centers where patients can receive treatment closer to home.

Centers have been completed in Monroeville, Butler, Center, Beaver County, Hempfield and Erie.

Nearly 2 million new cancer cases, including some 80,000 in Pennsylvania, are expected to be diagnosed in 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The institute will be home to advanced technologies, including specifically designed treatments for breast cancer patients.

It’s designed to be patient-friendly, allowing patients to take care of most of their needs under one roof.

The Institute will also have connections to experts at other top facilities, including Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, said AHN. Patients in the Pittsburgh area will have remote access to Kimmel Center doctors, research and clinical trials, according to Dr. Kenneth Cohen, the director of strategic planning and integration at Johns Hopkins.

The cancer institute is located between Allegheny General Hospital’s South Tower and its Sandusky Street parking garage. Valet parking will be available and navigators inside the institute will help guide patients through the process.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will be limited due to covid-19 restrictions. Only select speakers, city and community officials, and media will attend in person as the event is broadcast to AHN and Highmark Health stakeholders via Zoom.
