A local animal shelter has issued a plea for donations to help it provide services after its regular sources of income dried up because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Despite having to make the heartbreaking decision to cut back our staffing … we remain committed to keeping our most critical and life-sustaining programs operating during this difficult time,” said Kathleen Beaver, president and CEO of Animal Friends in Ohio Township.
Beaver said the nonprofit organization needs help replacing money it typically raises from programs, services and events that have been canceled during the mandated shutdown to slow the spread of coronavirus.
“While our daily lives are far from normal, we are doing everything we can to continue for the animals who need us most,” she said. “But without the critical funds … Animal Friends cannot continue at all.”
The shelter continues to provide animals with food and water, medication and behavioral services despite the loss of income and the reduction in staff, she said.
The shelter’s humane officer is available to investigate reports of animal abuse, and the Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank is partnering with local food pantries to help people struggling to feed their pets.
The organization has set up a telemedicine program for those with questions about the health of their pets.
Information about services available is posted on the shelter’s website.
“While our world and our community are affected by an unprecedented pandemic and an ever-changing way of daily life, the need for our lifesaving programs and services is greater than ever,” Beaver said.
Donations can be made through the shelter’s website and on its Facebook page.
