Pirates make 'bun' of themselves in Instagram post
The Pittsburgh Pirates PR team had a bun time on social media explaining the mystery of why they appeared to run out of hot dog buns on Wednesday.
They’ve tackled the problem head-on and aren’t being weenies about it.
In a Friday evening Instagram post, the Pirate Parrot, one of the team’s mascots, is seen standing with a goose beside a bench near PNC Park along the Allegheny River.
Atop the bench is a crate filled with hot dog buns. The Parrot sits down and begins to break bread with his fowl friend.
Suddenly, something startles the Parrot. He then grabs what, at first glance, appears to be a black case of sorts.
In reality, it’s a hilariously oversized flip-phone.
Upon opening it, you can see a received text message from @Pirates: “Bird! Did you take the hot dog buns again?”
The frazzled Parrot jumps up, grabs the crate and scampers away toward the park — dropping some buns in the process.
Fans appear to appreciate the jest in the gesture.
“Great use of social media to poke fun at yourselves! Can’t wait to see how this season goes! Let’s Go Bucs!” user dglucente replied.
“Well played Pirates well played!” danguevara1974 said.
“That’s priceless lol” msmith281 added.
The Pirates even clapped back at one hater:
“Of course it’s the great value buns,” tyler_eritz01 said, suggesting the Bucs use a generic brand bun.
“nah. Giant Iggle,” the Pirates account replied in reference to Pittsburgh-based supermarket chain Giant Eagle.
Aramark, the PNC Park concession vendor, said they did not run out of buns Wednesday, but rather the concessions team “experienced an uncharacteristic lag in restocking some stands during the game.”
