A truck driver from Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works Environmental Services Bureau has died from covid-19, officials said Wednesday.

He is the first city employee to die from the coronavirus, officials said.

“I am praying for his family, friends and co-workers in these tragic times. The pandemic may be global but it’s still hitting us very close to home,” Mayor Bill Peduto said in a statement.

The man, who was not identified, began working for the city in 1995. Officials said he did not contract covid-19 while working, but did not elaborate on how he became ill.

Black ribbon decals will be affixed to refuse and recycling trucks in the man’s memory.
