Rivers Casino Pittsburgh will start furloughing most of its employees beginning next week amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“This was an extremely difficult decision and one we desperately hoped to avoid,” Rivers CEO Greg Carlin said in a statement issued Thursday.

The casino has been closed since March 15 to help stop the spread of covid-19.

The casino did not specify how many employees would be furloughed. Employees will be paid for the past month, according to an emailed statement. There will be substantial salary cuts for the few employees that remain, the casino said.

The furloughs are expected to last through June 30. All employee health benefits will continue to be paid by the company, the casino said.

The casino will reopen when the state determines that it’s safe to do so. All commercial casinos in the U.S. are currently closed.
