The Shop ‘n Save grocery store chain is donating $10,000 to benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Westmoreland County Food Bank as demand for their services has soared during the coronavirus crisis.
The donation, funded by the brand’s independent retailers, is equivalent to 50,000 meals.
“The customers and employees of Shop ‘n Save have felt the impact of covid-19 hit close to home in unique ways,” said Don Fabian, senior merchandiser. “The independent retailers across Shop ‘n Save locations feel strongly about doing their part by giving back to organizations and populations in need during these uncertain times.”
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank president and CEO Lisa Scales said the organization was extremely grateful to Shop ‘n Save.
“They have always been a great partner and this donation will allow us to feed more of our neighbors, so that putting food on the table is one less worry for them in this uncertain time,” Scales said.
In addition to its $10,000 contribution, Shop ‘n Save is giving a 10% discount on all of its gift cards to food banks, food pantries and food kitchens.
“Our hope is that these charitable organizations can supply gift cards to families who may require extra assistance in buying grocery staples like milk, bread, paper goods and so on,” Fabian said.
“We recognize that hundreds of customers may be facing challenges they’ve never faced before and wanted to offer additional resources to help them address these needs.”
