Smallman Galley, a restaurant incubator that opened in the Strip District in 2015, will move to a larger space in the city’s Larimer section later this year.

Galley Group announced this week that its new location will be in Bakery Square, the growing office/retail/residential complex managed by Walnut Capital.

The new food hall, called Galley – Bakery Square, will follow the group’s established format. Four independent restaurants operate under one roof with shared seating; Galley Group runs the central bar and front-of-house staff. The concept is designed to help budding chefs grow their business with lower risk. A new crop of restaurants are brought in about every 18 months.

Galley Group also operates Federal Galley in Nova Place in Pittsburgh’s North Side.

The owners announced in March that the Smallman Galley space would close this year, at the same time that they closed operations in Cleveland and Detroit.

Galley Group CEO Chad Ellingboe said this week that “after five years in the Strip District, it is time for us to breathe some new life into the first Galley, and it was important for us to find a partner that was as excited as we are about the future.”

As part of a new Bakery Square building, the Galley Group project will occupy a two-story food hall with indoor and outdoor seating, and a mezzanine overlooking the Bakery Square courtyard.

The line-up of restaurants will be announced closer to building’s scheduled completion this winter.
