Students at the South Allegheny School District were dismissed early Tuesday after a bedbug was found in a school building, officials said.
District officials made the decision to dismiss middle and high school students early out of “an abundance of caution.” Finding a bedbug doesn’t mean the building is infested, officials said.
“Today we found a confirmed bedbug at the middle/high school. Finding one does not mean that the building is infested, however, in an abundance of caution, SA will have a licensed pest control specialist treat the entire middle/high school including every classroom, the office areas and lockers this afternoon,” officials said in a statement posted to on the district’s website. “Due to this precaution (treating the building) middle and high school students will begin a rolling dismissal with high school students at approx. 11:20 a.m. with middle school to follow at approximately 12:45 p.m.”
Officials said middle and high school classes are expected to resume Wednesday. The district’s middle and high school students are housed in the same building.
The district’s education center and elementary school had classes as usual Tuesday and will have school Wednesday, officials said.
Officials said the middle/high school will be closed for classes and after-school activities, including the Fitness Center, on Tuesday.
Athletic practices were moved to the elementary school. The Mon Valley mid-day bus run was cancelled and students will be going home, officials said.
The district serves students in Port Vue, Liberty, Glassport and Lincoln.
