A Pittsburgh walk to support multiple sclerosis research is expected to raise more than $400,000 and draw 4,000 people to Point State Park next month, organizers said.
A new study published in February showed nearly 1 million Americans are living with the disease, twice as many as previously estimated.
“Twice as many people need a cure and to know they have a community to support them,” Cyndi Zagieboylo, president and CEO of the National MS Society, said in a statement. “Nobody should face MS alone, which is why Walk MS is so powerful as the gathering place for the MS movement.”
Money raised at the annual walk, called Walk MS: Pittsburgh, will go to support programs and services for those affected by MS, a disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system, causing a range of symptoms such as numbness, blindness and paralysis.
Most people are diagnosed with MS between the ages of 20 and 50.
The Walk MS: Pittsburgh event is at 9:30 a.m. on April 14 at Point State Park.
