Woodland Hills School District suspended its cheerleading activities after a cheerleader tested positive for covid-19, school officials announced Thursday.
The district’s on-site testing center discovered the positive case, according to Superintendent James Harris.
“We do testing at our high school and one of the young ladies tested positive, so we suspended the program for a couple weeks,” Harris said. “We test all of our athletes and coaches.”
Harris said the cheerleading program would likely resume in about two weeks.
Following the positive result, the district plans to retest all students and adults who have been in contact with the cheerleading program. They’ll also sanitize the practice area and conduct contact tracing.
There is no indication that the cheerleader spread the virus to other students or coaches, Harris said.
Metro Community Health Center, based in Swissvale, is operating the covid-19 testing site at Woodland Hills High School. The testing is available to the community, but it’s also easily accessible for Woodland Hills students, a benefit Harris said is imperative for students’ safe return to sports.
“Since the county is moving ahead with athletics, every school district should have some sort of testing on-site for students,” Harris said.
