Pittsburgh crews on Monday began the first phase of a project that will better link the Three Rivers Heritage Trail to Riverview Park.

City officials said they are improving a trail that will connect the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and Riverview Park via the Mairdale Neighborway in Marshall-Shadeland and Brighton Heights.

Construction will occur along Woods Run and McClure avenues over the next five days from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., officials said. Drivers should expect one-lane traffic with flaggers on Woods Run Avenue. McClure Avenue will be closed.

Crews also will post temporary no-parking signs throughout the corridor where work is taking place.

The project will extend the one-way climbing bike lane that starts at the intersection of Mairdale Avenue and Oakdale Street. The bike lane extension will go in the uphill direction on Woods Run Avenue for 0.3 miles to the curve in the road to help cyclists climbing the hill into Riverview Park.

The project also will install speed tables, improved pedestrian crossings, shared-lane pavement markings, wayfinding signage and other safety improvements.

Data from the city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure indicated a need for traffic calming along McClure and Woods Run avenues. According to DOMI, there were 42 reported crashes and two pedestrian crashes in the past five years, and at least 60% of drivers speed through the corridor.
