A Pittsburgh man was arrested Monday for robbing a bank on the city’s North Side, which authorities said was the second area bank he robbed in just two weeks.
Dwayne Russell Harvey, 55, entered the Citizens Bank at 106 Isabella St. — near the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Shore — around 1:20 p.m. Aug. 8, according to a criminal complaint in the case. He walked up to the bank teller and asked for a deposit slip, on which Harvey wrote, “Fill up the bag — no dye packets.”
The teller handed over $3,348 in cash, the criminal complaint said. Then, Harvey, who never threatened the teller or showed him a weapon, fled. The teller hit the alarm at 1:24 p.m.
Harvey, who was recorded by surveillance cameras, darted to a nearby North Shore parking lot, where he changed between parked cars from a gray-hooded sweatshirt and matching sweatpants into a white T-shirt and light-blue hat, the criminal complaint said. Along the way, he dropped a medical mask that had partially concealed his face.
Harvey then boarded Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus #6301, fleeing to the Mexican War Streets in the North Side, the criminal complaint said.
A city camera picked up Harvey exiting the bus and walking on West North Avenue, where he discarded the red bag used in the robbery, police said. Harvey’s last known address is the YMCA on West North Avenue.
During their investigation, Pittsburgh police learned about a North Versailles police investigation into a July 28 Huntington Bank robbery there.
The two robberies, committed days apart, had “a similar suspect and MO,” with Harvey’s scruffy beard, protruding jawline and build matching in both instances, police said. In North Versailles, Harvey, who police identified as a suspect, also asked the bank teller for a deposit slip to write the demand note, and changed clothes shortly after the robbery.
The wording on the demand note also was similar, though Harvey added “no dye packets” the second time because one exploded on him after the North Versailles robbery, police said.
Pittsburgh police charged Harvey with robbery and theft by unlawful taking, court records show. North Versailles police filed similar charges Thursday.
Pittsburgh police apprehended Harvey on the North Side Monday and took him to Allegheny County Jail, police said.
He was awaiting arraignment Monday afternoon, court records show. No attorney was listed.
