Though Christmastime is not quite here, Pittsburgh officials are getting ready to deck the halls.
The city’s Department of Public Works Forestry Division on Monday announced it is looking for Pittsburgh’s 107th annual Christmas tree, which will be on display in front of the City-County Building on Grant Street throughout the holiday season.
“Even though it’s September, Forestry is busy with holiday planning,” said Lisa Ceoffe, city forester with the Department of Public Works. “We are excited to find the perfect tree for the City-County Building this year and look forward to celebrating the holiday season with Pittsburgh.”
The tree chosen by city officials will be transported to its new location in early November, ahead of Light Up Night on Saturday, November 19.
The tree will serve as Pittsburgh’s official Christmas tree through the New Year.
The annual Christmas tree at the City-County Building dates back to 1914, making it one of Pittsburgh’s oldest traditions, officials said.
Last year’s tree was a blue spruce planted in the 1990s and donated to the city by the Fuga family from the city’s Lincoln Place neighborhood.
Potential trees can be any evergreen variety and should be at least 40 feet tall.
