It is no secret that small businesses, such as family restaurants and corner stores, have been hit hard during the covid pandemic.
With vaccinations on the rise and safety protocols loosening up, Oakmont Chamber of Commerce members believe now is a great time to encourage more people to come out to the borough and shop.
A “Comeback Crawl” is set for noon to 4 p.m. Saturday with participants eligible to win a $1,000 grand prize.
There is no registration or purchase necessary to play. More than 30 businesses have signed up for the event with many offering special deals to mark the occasion.
Game boards are free and can be picked up at the Oaks Theater, 310 Allegheny River Blvd.
Boards are stamped at participating businesses. Each stamp is a chance to win the prize.
A winner will be pulled at 4:30 p.m. at Carnivores, 215 Allegheny Ave.
Players do not need to be present to win.
“I think it’s great idea,” chamber director Karen DeTurk said. “We need to start getting back to some sort of normalcy. I think everyone is ready for it. I believe people are going to wear masks in most places. It’s supposed to be a beautiful day. Hopefully that will bring out the people. We’re trying to get people into Oakmont visiting the stores again.”
The crawl was planned by chamber members Sarah Hummel of Be Yoga Oakmont and attorney Meg Burkardt.
“Bar crawls are very popular events, but we did not want to restrict the event to just bars,” Burkardt said. “We decided to simply call it a crawl. Our whole idea was to have an event that was safe for customers to come back to shopping and dining in Oakmont. Then we thought, Comeback Crawl. This is a family-friendly event that will stretch throughout Oakmont from The Oakmont Bakery to the Lot in Edgewater.”
Participating businesses include the bakery, Ace Hardware, Amanda Lee Glassware, Bernie’s Flower Shop, Boulevard Sweet Shoppe, Burk’s BBQ, Butler Brew Works, Carabella, Casey’s, Castle Toys & Games, Chelsea Grille, Hoffstot’s Cafe Monaco, Mystery Lovers Bookshop, Oakmont Candle Works and Oakmont Deli.
