Plum Borough School District reverted to its previously approved health and safety plan due to a Dec. 10 decision by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

The court affirmed a lower court ruling that the state’s acting secretary of health did not have the authority to issue a mandatory mask mandate for schools in August. The ruling ended the mandate effective immediately. Going forward, school districts can implement their own making policies as they see fit.

A Dec. 11 letter to parents and guardians reads: “Based on the current Allegheny County PCR rates (14 Day Positivity by Age and Sex) and the District matrix, the following will stay and/or will go into effect:

● Masks will still be required in grades K-12 until it becomes optional for all students on January 11, 2022, when the

revised plan goes into effect. Please see the linked summary of changes that were approved by the Board on

November 23, 2021.

● Interested students in grades 7-12 will have the one time option to enroll in PlumFLEX until noon on Wednesday,

December 15, 2021. Those enrolling may begin utilizing PlumFLEX on Friday, December 17, 2021. It is

imperative that you read how PlumFLEX has changed from last year to this year to determine if it is the best

option for your child. Please read here. PlumFLEX will cease as an option for all students at the end of 3rd nine

weeks. Families in grades 7-12 wishing to avail themselves of the PlumFLEX option are required to complete this

declaration form.

● If the changes to PlumFLEX do not work for your family, the opportunity to participate in an asynchronous learning

environment through our Plum Digital Learning Academy is still an option. If you have any questions, please

contact your building principal.

● As indicated previously, we will always follow any legal mandates from the Federal, State, or County

government(s). Due to the Federal mandate, masks will still be required on District transportation after January 11,

2022. If there is a change in status, it will be communicated.”
