The Plum Borough Municipal Authority will start work later this year on the third phase of replacing water lines on Sardis Road while preparing for the fourth and final phase of the project.

The authority last year received a $916,000 grant for the third phase, which will replace an 8-inch water line with a 12-inch line between Harris and Old Leechburg roads.

The total cost for the phase is more than $1.45 million, according to the authority.

The authority will begin designing the fourth and final phase of the Sardis Road project this year. It will be between Old Leechburg and Renton roads; it’s expected to cost about $825,000.

In other upgrades

• The authority is looking to replace water service into the Edwards Road area along with providing fire protection.

• It also is looking to provide alternative main water line feeds into the Woodlawn and Briarwood subdivisions.

• The authority and borough are working together to provide a new, 1,600-foot water line connection along Mike Thomas Way to Ross Hollow and Old Leechburg roads. It is expected to cost $95,000.

• The authority will open bids this year for repainting the Logans Ferry water storage facility. That’s expected to cost $400,000.

To ensure that residents’ service lines are free of lead, the authority mailed out surveys in April. Residents who received a survey and have not responded are asked to do so as soon as possible or contact the authority’s office, which can be reached at 412-793-7331.

In 2023, the authority finished the Davidson Road water line project, which replaced 1,700 feet of 8-inch line. It cost about $489,000, not including engineering costs for design and inspection fees.

In its annual drinking water quality report for 2023, the authority said its drinking water met federal and state requirements. The authority buys finished drinking water from the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County, which obtains raw water from the Beaver Run Reservoir.

Residents can sign up to receive alerts from the municipal authority through the Nixle system. Residents can register online at plumboroughma.com or by texting their ZIP code to 888777 followed by the keyword PBMAWATER.

The authority’s board of directors meets at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the municipal authority building, 4555 New Texas Road.
