The Plum High School Homecoming Court was announced during halftime of the Mustangs’ football game against Highlands High School on Oct. 2.

It features Francesca Beighley, Emmalee Karns, Keegan McLean, Julia Vargo, Mia Pampena and Abby Lewis.

GOP event planned

A GOP Get Out the Vote gathering is set for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Northmoreland Park off Markle Road in Apollo.

Guest speakers include Congressman Glenn Thompson, State House Speaker Bryan Cutler, Allegheny County GOP chairman and county Councilman Sam DeMarco, Westmoreland County GOP Chairman Bill Bretz, state Auditor General candidate Tim DeFoor, state Treasurer candidate Stacy Garrity, a surrogate for state Attorney General candidate Heather Heidelbaugh, state Senate 45th District candidate Nicole Ziccarelli, 18th District congressional candidate Luke Negron and state House 25th District candidate John Ritter.

Recycling event set

Pennsylvania Resources Council will bring its traveling glass recycling bin program to Boyce Park in Plum from Oct. 24 to 29.

The bin will be at the soccer fields off Pierson Run Road and Centerview Drive.

PRC has collected more than 58 tons of glass since launching its program in early June. Go to prc.org/glassrecycling or call 412-488-7490 for more information.

Verona market continues

Verona’s Farmers Market continues every Thursday through Nov. 19 from 2 to 7 p.m. in Railroad Park next to the borough building along East Railroad Avenue.

Vendors include Schramm Farms & Orchards, Jewelry by Susi, Tom’s Candy Co., Up in Suds, Crafted Treasures and Designs by Becka.

More vendors are expected to participate in the market. Interested parties can send emails to sgaribay16@gmail.com.

Leaf collection to begin

Oakmont’s leaf collection will begin Oct. 12. Residents are reminded to rake leaves to the curb and not onto the street.

Remove any large branches and put those in yard waste bins.

Libraries are open

Plum Community Library at 445 Center-New Texas Road is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Masks must be worn and are available for those who do not have one. Curbside pickup is also available upon request.

Oakmont Carnegie Library at 700 Allegheny River Blvd. is open for in-person visits by appointment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m.

Appointments can be made either through the library’s website or by calling 412-828-9532.

Up to five people in a family can browse at the same time. Browsing time is limited to 30 minutes, and masks are required to enter the building. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Computer usage also is available by appointment during the browsing days from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Computer sessions are limited to 45 minutes, and users must wear masks.

Curbside pickup of materials also is available during browsing times. More information is available at oakmontlibrary.org.

Bus is back

Riverview Community Action Corp. bus service for all Oakmont and Verona residents is back in operation.

Reservations can be made from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Rules include making reservations at least 24 hours in advance, only three people on the bus at one time for social distancing, masks worn when on the bus and drivers taking passengers’ temperatures. They may refuse service if riders are sick.

Historical meetings canceled

Verona Historical Society has canceled its meetings until further notice due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Meetings usually take place at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at the borough building along East Railroad Avenue.

Flu clinic offered

Plum EMS is hosting a free flu clinic from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the Holiday Park Volunteer Fire Department, 415 Old Aber’s Creek Road.
