Pest alert: Allegheny County meetings address spotted lanternfly
Allegheny County residents can learn how to identify the spotted lanternfly and help curb its spread by attending a series of public meetings sponsored by Penn State Extension.
The invasive insect has expanded throughout Pennsylvania since 2014, posing a threat to the state’s grape, tree fruit, hardwood and nursery industries. Economists at Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences have conducted research indicating that if left unchecked, the pest could potentially drain the state’s economy of at least $324 million annually and result in the loss of 2,800 jobs.
The meetings will be held at the following locations and times:
• June 5 — 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Parish Hill Barn, Walter Road, McCandless
• June 7 — 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Buffalo Inn, 3757-3779 Buffalo Drive, South Park Township
• June 9 — 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Boyce Park Four Seasons Lodge, 901 Centerview Drive, Plum
• June 12 — 6-8 p.m. at Frick Environmental Center, Point Breeze
• June 14 — 2:30-5:30 p.m. at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, North Fayette
Green industry extension educator Sandy Feather will present the latest research on the impact of the insects, their management and the measures being taken to contain their spread. Feather will offer practical advice on how residents can contribute to combating the problem.
“We aim to prevent panic and discourage ineffective and unsafe methods of controlling the spotted lanternfly, as observed in the eastern part of the state,” Feather said. “By providing facts and actionable steps, we hope to empower residents and give them a sense of control over the situation.”
The meeting will cover these topics:
• Biology and life cycle of the spotted lanternfly
• Plant damage caused by the insect
• Management options
• Past and current methods to limit the spread
Penn State Extension offers the sessions free, but preregistration is mandatory to comply with venue occupancy limits. Registration deadlines vary depending on the location.
