Plum will spend more than $1 million to resurface about 10 miles of roads this year.

Council awarded a $1.22 million contract to Derry Construction.

The work will not start until Aug. 1 at the earliest, to give borough crews time to finish other work on the roads, borough Manager David Soboslay said.

Derry, one of eight contractors that submitted bids, offered the lowest total cost for the work on 15 roads, part of the borough’s base bid, and three roads bid separately for seal coating.

The highest bid came in at about $1.62 million.

Included in the base bid are:

• Abers Creek Road, from Saltsburg Road to Holiday Park Drive;

• Millers Lane, from Saltsburg Road to Regency Drive;

• Francis Road, from Regency Drive to Saltsburg Road;

• Scott Road, from Unity Center to Roberts roads;

• Roberts Road, from Scott Road to end;

• Clements Road, from Roberts to Scott roads;

• Palmer Road, from Center New Texas to Francis roads;

• Fox Road, from Palmer Road to end;

• Klimeyer Drive, from Scott Road to end;

• Mardi Gras Drive, from Saltsburg Road to Hialeah Drive;

• Nassau Drive, from Mardi Gras to Ozark drives;

• Samoa Drive, from Nassau Drive to end;

• Havanna Drive, from Mardi Gras to Holiday Park drives;

• Paree Drive, from Havanna Drive to Havanna Drive; and

• Entrance Drive, from Logan Ferry Road to Short Street.

Derry’s cost for that work was just over $1 million.

The company bid just under $122,000 to seal coat three roads:

• Ross Hollow Road, from New Texas to Old Leechburg roads;

• Harris Road, from Ross Hollow to Sardis roads; and

• Clements Road, from Renton to Saltsburg roads.

The borough’s public works department was advocating for the seal coating work on Clements because the road is slippery, Soboslay said. Seal coating it, also known as tar-and-chipping, will go a long way toward solving that problem, he said.

The borough will pay for the work with $1,025,000 budgeted for road paving this year, with the remainder coming from reserves in its liquid fuels and street fund accounts, Soboslay said.
