In 2019, plenty of youngsters — grownups, too — had the opportunity for close encounters of the vehicular kind during the Touch A Truck, the Plum Chamber of Commerce’s largest event to date.
Chances for a repeat were delayed two years, but plans call for a convoy to gather again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14 at Plum High School for an extravaganza that will feature more than 20 motorized machines. And if the weather cooperates, those in attendance can expect a medical helicopter to land at the site.
Other attractions include half a dozen food and snack trucks, along with children’s activities such as face painting, an inflatable obstacle course, a trackless train and the creativity of a balloon artist. Plus the Pirate Parrot mascot is scheduled to visit from 1 to 2 p.m.
Admission is $5 per person, and plenty of parking is available the high school. And everyone is invited, according to Anna Zvirman-Nesbit, who chairs the chamber of commerce board.
“We welcome participants from any surrounding area,” Zvirman-Nesbit, co-owner of Soxman Funeral Homes Ltd. in Penn Hills, said. “I’m excited to see what it shapes up to be.”
As for the chamber, it’s shaping up as a growing organization.
“Our membership has increase pretty significantly within the last year, and people are getting excited to participate in those sorts of things again,” Zvirman-Nesbit said about activities along the lines of Touch A Truck. “Along with that, we’ve been able to bring on some new staff members to better serve the chamber, and we’ve also been able to develop a couple of new programs.”
For example, the chamber is offering $500 scholarships to two graduating high school seniors, primarily based on academic achievement and community service. Also, plans are progressing for a professional development series to benefit members of the organization.
The chamber often partners with entities such as Plum’s municipal government, Plum Borough School District and the Rotary Club of Plum in their endeavors.
“When you support the chamber,” Plum High School alumna Zvirman-Nesbit said, “you’re ultimately supporting the community because it allows us to make ourselves and sometimes funding available for different events and activities.”
