Plum graduate’s internship takes her to the United Nations

A Plum School District graduate’s internship has taken her to the United Nations.
Charlotte Jones, a member of the Class of 2021, is studying political science and international relations and diplomacy at Long Island University Honors College in Brooklyn. She plans to pursue a doctorate and is considering a career in international law and foreign service.
Jones was invited to apply for an internship with World Information Transfer while attending a UN conference.
World Information Transfer promotes environmental health and literacy. Christine Durbak founded it after the Chernobyl disaster.
“As an intern for WIT, I attend daily United Nations meetings,” Jones said. “I am responsible for taking notes on the meeting and transcribing my notes into memos. World Information Transfer publishes a quarterly World Ecology Report where the memos may be included.
“The goal of WIT is to make the discussions/meeting information more accessible to the general public.”
Jones said she gets to sit in on UN Security Council meetings almost every day, where she witnesses discussion on pressing issues firsthand.
“The international political realm is faced with growing instability. WIT allows me to be a part of the discussion on how to combat it,” she said. “My internship has also allowed me to learn so much, the statements I listen to are not always in line with the values of the United States and its agenda.
“I have the opportunity to hear different perspectives and opinions on situations, allowing me to have a deeper and more well-rounded understanding.”
Jones, 21, is the daughter of Leonard and Rae Ann Jones, of Plum, who own and run Plum Animal Hospital on Unity Center Road.
