Plum Area Ladies Society 

Plum Area Ladies Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at Plum Community Center, 499 Center New Texas Road.

Mark Serrao, owner of Oakmont Bakery, will speak to the group about the history of the bakery. Annual dues of $25 may be paid.

There will be two service projects this month. The first will be to fill the distributed totes with comfort items for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Suggested items are cookies, crackers, word puzzle books, coloring books for adults, colored pencils, journals (notebooks), pens, unscented hand cream and magazines.

The second service project is to bring in snacks and other items to fill Christmas stockings for soldiers overseas through Military Connections.

For Ladies Day Out, PALS members will celebrate Octoberfest at the Golden Goblet on Oct.22 with dinner and drinks. Signup will be at the meeting.

Plum Area Ladies Society is a service and social club open to women from Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville, Murrysville and surrounding communities. Newcomers are welcome at meetings, held at 6:30 on the first Wednesday of the month, September through April at Plum Community Center.

‘Protect Your ID’ seminar

The Holy Family Parish SOS Ministry team announces an educational seminar, “Protect Your ID,” with Officer Joe Risher of the Allegheny County Police Department and Terrie Anthony from AAA East Central.

They will discuss the many ways that you can protect yourself from being a victim of identity theft and how to protect against scammers. The seminar will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at Holy Family Parish, Our Lady of Joy Church Hall, 2000 O’Block Road, Plum.

Line dancing in Oakmont

Join Riverview Community Action Corp., the senior center in Oakmont, for line dancing every Friday morning starting Oct. 7.

Beginners Line Dancing starts at 9:15, followed by a class for more experienced dancers at 10 o’clock at the Riverside Park Pavilion. Cost is $1 per class. No registration is necessary.

In cases of inclement weather, classes will be held at RCAC, 501 Second St.

Toy drive starts

Lower Valley Athletic Foundation’s Christmas Toy Drive begins Oct. 1 and ends the first week of December.

There will be donation boxes in Verona the borough building and Inner Groove Brewing, both along East Railroad Avenue. Organizers are looking for new, unopened toys for children of all ages.

Toy distribution is expected a week before Christmas. The foundation will reach out to local schools and churches to find families in need.

‘Books and Brews’

Plum Borough Community Library and the Brewery at Luciano’s will present “Books and Brews” at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the library, 445 Center-New Texas Road.

Brewer John Luciano will explain the process of making beer and serve samples from the Monroeville restaurant.

The event is for guests 21 and older. Register at https://plumlibrary.org/. Space is limited.

Property appeal education forum

Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor will host a community town hall to share information and resources with residents on the property appeals process. The event is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Penn Hills Library. 1037 Stotler Road.

Dungeons and Dragons

Lower Valley Athletic Foundation will host an interactive Dungeons and Dragons event at 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Verona Fire Hall, 465 Parker St.

Participants are encouraged to dress up as medieval characters. They will go through a story will live actors.

Cost is $30 per player. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Deadline to register is Oct. 16. Attendees can sign up through the LVAF Facebook page.

Hydrant flushing scheduled

Plum Municipal Authority will conduct its hydrant flushing program through Oct. 21.

No work will be done on weekends. Customers may experience low pressure and should test water before doing laundry or drawing large quantities of water because it may be discolored. Water color usually clears within a few hours.

Trunk or Treat

A-Amy’s Notary is sponsoring a free Trunk or Treat for the community from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 22 in the parking lot at 140 Sandune Drive, Plum.

There will be games, music and a costume contest.
