Pittsburgh City Council is considering a proposal to allow recreational camping by youth groups in city parks.

Councilman Bobby Wilson, who sponsored the measure, said he worked with the Outdoor Inclusion Coalition to introduce the bill.

“At Riverview Park on the North Side, these organizations are planning to open a Gear Lending Library so that families and children who live near this great regional park but lack access to hiking and camping gear can check out the supplies they need to get outside,” Wilson said.

“Access to backpacks, sleeping bags and tents will improve physical and mental health outcomes and build a stronger and more diverse outdoor community,” he added.

Wilson represents the area where Riverview Park is located.

“The first step in getting outdoors was introducing a bill to permit camping in our city’s great parks,” he said.

The measure would direct the Parks and Recreation Department to come up with regulations and guidelines for camping in the parks.

“Camping is a unique experience that can cultivate a life-changing connection with the outdoors,” said Kathryn Vargas, director of Parks and Recreation. “By providing this experience in our own backyard, we are expanding access to quality outdoor recreation activities for all young people that live in the city of Pittsburgh.”

The measure was introduced to City Council on Monday with no discussion. It could be ready for a preliminary vote as early as next week, with a final vote as soon as the following week.
