The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority issued a boil-water advisory Thursday for Pittsburgh’s Elliott, Westwood, Ridgemont and Crafton Heights neighborhoods after a water main break.

The authority reported a break in an eight-inch water main on Steuben Street around 8:15 p.m. It resulted in low and no pressure in portions of the West End neighborhoods, PWSA said.

The main break was isolated, and water pressure was restored by around 8:30 p.m.

Contaminants can enter the drinking water when there is a water pressure loss, spurring the boil-water alert.

As a precautionary measure, PWSA issued a boil-water advisory to about 600 houses in the impacted neighborhoods. An interactive map shows who is affected.

Water buffaloes have been placed at 1110 Steuben St., Hamburg Street at Springfield Street, Lorenz Avenue at Rue Grande Vue and 1717 Hethlon St.

PWSA said they will conduct testing to confirm adequate disinfectant levels and ensure the water is safe.

They did not offer a timetable of how long the advisory may last.

The authority urged people in the impacted area to boil tap water for at least one minute before brushing teeth, making ice, washing raw food, preparing drinks, serving to pets or consuming. Boiling kills harmful bacteria in the water that may cause illness.
