Wireless service has been restored for all AT&T customers affected by the nationwide cellular outages on Thursday, according to NBC News.

The cause of the outage is still unknown, NBC News said. Federal Communications Commission is investigating, with help from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, NBC News reported.

Western Pennsylvania was not immune from the cellular outages across the nation on Thursday.

Service providers that reported cellular outages included: AT&T, Cricket Wireless, Verizon, T-Mobile and others, according to data from Downdetector, the Associated Press reported.

However, AT&T was hit the hardest, and was actively working to restore service, the AP said.

“AT&T had more than 58,000 outages around noon ET, in locations including Houston, Atlanta and Chicago,” the AP said. “The outages, which began at approximately 3:30 a.m. ET, peaked at around 73,000 reported incidents.”

The service provider has more than 240 million subscribers — the country’s largest, according to the AP.

Allegheny County Emergency Management said it could not provide any information on the matter on Thursday morning.

Westmoreland 911 dispatch said the outages didn’t affect operations, only consumers.

Dispatch said they received “numerous messages” from AT&T — mostly automated — about the outages and how they were being worked on.

“They’re saying that it’s out,” the 911 dispatcher said. “They’re not giving reasons why.”

Fire chiefs across the region said the outages do not seem to be affecting them.

“Most of our paging systems and everything our guys have is Comcast or Verizon, and we haven’t seen any problems,” said Youngwood VFD Fire Chief Lloyd Crago. “I’d say about 90% of our members are on one of those two carriers.”

Firefighters at both New Stanton VFD and Monroeville VFD No. 4 said they hadn’t seen any phone or communication issues on Thursday morning.

Cricket Wireless, which is owned by AT&T, had more than 9,000 outages, Verizon had more than 2,000 outages, T-Mobile had more than 1,400 outages and Boost Mobile had about 700 outages, Downdetector said Thursday, as reported by the AP.

However, T-Mobile said it did not experience an outage, according to the AP.

“Our network is operating normally. Downdetector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks,” T-Mobile said.

Alexander Wyglinski, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, said there was a possible workaround who were still being impacted by the outages, the AP reported.

“A lot of cell phones do Wi-Fi calling. So, as a potential backup, if you are close to a Wi-Fi access point, you may be able to use that if you are affected by the network outage,” he said in an emailed statement to the AP.
