With the change to more expensive summer gasoline underway across the country, the national average has increased for the second straight week, an industry analyst said.

Wholesale gasoline prices are increasing at a rate typical for this time of year, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“While oil prices edged slightly lower on weaker outlooks for economic growth, continued refinery maintenance and the higher cost of seasonal blends of fuel are offsetting oil’s decline. The price of diesel, however, continues to slowly decline as we see consumption for diesel lighten up,” he said. “The best news for both gasoline and diesel prices is how significant a drop we’ve seen from year-ago levels, with more disinflation to come in the weeks ahead, even as gas prices are likely to inch up.”

According to AAA, the national average Monday was about $3.47 per gallon. That’s up about 7 cents from a week ago, but about 6 cents less than a month ago and about 85 cents less than a year ago.

State averages per gallon range from $3.02 in Mississippi to $4.92 in California, according to AAA.

Pennsylvania’s statewide average was about $3.63, according to AAA. That’s up about 1 cent from a week ago, but about 9 cents less than a month ago and about 80 cents less than a year ago.

County averages across the state ranged from about $3.48 to $3.85 per gallon, according to AAA. County averages in the Pittsburgh area:

• Armstrong: $3.78

• Allegheny: $3.74

• Beaver: $3.68

• Butler: $3.72

• Washington: $3.73

• Westmoreland: $3.76

GasBuddy reported the Pittsburgh-area average at $3.73 per gallon, based on its survey of 731 stations. That’s half a cent more than a week ago, but about 8 cents less than a month ago and 60 cents less than a year ago.

Pittsburgh-area prices ranged from $3.45 to $3.99 per gallon, a difference of 54 cents per gallon, according to GasBuddy.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices:

• Akron: $3.24, down 12 cents from last week.

• Cleveland: $3.34, down 5 cents from last week.

• West Virginia: $3.40, up 15 cents from last week.

The national average price of diesel is down 4 cents in the past week to $4.30 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.
