A Johnstown man, charged a January homicide in Cambria County, was apprehended over the weekend in North Carolina, state police said Monday.
Dionte Demond Jones, 28, was taken into custody in Fayetteville, N.C., after state police filed criminal homicide charges Saturday. In cooperation with the U.S. Marshal Service, Jones was located and apprehended shortly afterward.
Police said Jones shot Dashawn C. Green-Brewster on Jan. 18, 2021, at a residence on C Street in Johnstown. Green-Brewster’s body was discovered three days later by a highway maintenance worker in southern Indiana County.
Two Johnstown women, a mother and daughter, have also been charged with hindering the investigation into Green’s death.
Janayah P. Smith, 23, was charged in September with four felony counts of hindering apprehension and related charges. Her mother Joyce A. Smith, 58, was charged with three similar felony counts.
Both were remanded to Cambria County Prison, with preliminary hearings scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Oct. 14 before District Judge Michael Musulin.
On Jan. 18, Johnstown police initially responded to a call for shots fired in the area of C Street, but were unable to locate any victims. Further investigation by state police after the discovery of Green’s body led to the execution of a search warrant at 163 C Street. Police said seven 9-millimeter shell casings near the rear door were found near an area of dried blood matching Green’s.
Jones was taken to Hoke County Jail in North Carolina.
