A Johnstown man will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole in the October 2020 shooting death of an Indiana University of Pennsylvania student at an off-campus apartment.
Terrion Gates, 22, was convicted in September of second-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy to robbery in the incident at the Carriage House in Indiana.
During Friday’s sentencing, he received a consecutive prison sentence of one to two years on the robbery convictions, Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi said.
Gates conspired with three co-defendants to rob Jaedyn Wright at the Carriage House, authorities said. Gates escalated the situation when he brought his gun and fired the fatal round that killed Wright.
Gates fled Indiana and eventually was apprehended on a warrant in Altoona by that city’s police and U.S. Marshals.
Wright, 20, of Pittsburgh was found shot in a parking lot on Oakland Avenue in Indiana about 4 a.m. on Oct. 17, 2020, police said at the time.
Initial investigations led police to believe four people conspired to rob Wright of a large quantity of marijuana, which led to the shooting.
“While this conviction and sentence will not bring the victim back to his family, it will go to punish the person who choose to rob the victim and, ultimately, shoot him,” said Manzi.
Two of the co-defendants also have been sentenced.
Delmar L. Chatman, 25, of Johnstown pleaded guilty to robbery. He was sentence to 6 to 15 years in prison followed by a year of probation.
Isaiah A. Moore, 24, of Philadelphia pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. He was sentenced to 17 to 34 years in prison followed by a year of probation.
Isabella Marie Edmonds, 22, of Indiana was found walking along Oakland Avenue following the incident. She was 17 at the time but turned 18 a week later and was charged as an adult. She waived to court charges of homicide, robbery and conspiracy.
