CitiParks puts call out for lifeguards
As winter continues to grip the Pittsburgh area, CitiParks is thinking warmer thoughts as summer approaches — and that means lifeguard recruitment.
The CitiParks Aquatics Team recruits, trains and certifies lifeguards every year. Maria Montano, communications director for Mayor Ed Gainey’s office, said, “Since the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the task of onboarding lifeguards has given us new challenges, with the biggest one still looming: Recruiting enough lifeguards to open the City of Pittsburgh’s outdoor pools. In 2021 we were able to open 8, and in 2022 we saw 12 pools open. For 2023, we would like to open as many as possible, but this is dependent on how many lifeguards we are able to bring onboard.”
CitiParks has increased hourly pay rates from last year, with this year’s lifeguards earning from $16.48-$19.05 per hour, based on experience.
Lifeguards must be Pittsburgh residents, at least 16 years old by Sept. 5 and willing to work at any CitiParks outdoor pool.
Those interested in being a lifeguard or returning guards, can “pre-apply” should fill out the 2023 Lifeguard Job Interest Form. The CitiParks Aquatics Office will get in touch when applications open and the training classes/recertification classes are set.
Ready to apply? The job application is now available here.

PennDOT seeks public feedback
PennDOT said it’s interested in the public’s feedback on its winter services through an online survey.
The survey, active through April 6, should take about five minutes to complete, according to PennDOT. All responses are completely anonymous.
The 17-question survey asks respondents about their timeline expectations for safe and passable roadways, how they rank snow-removal priorities, and how they rate PennDOT’s winter services.
Respondents are also asked how they receive PennDOT roadway information, and whether or how they use the state’s 511PA traveler information services. During the winter, www.511PA.com offers its standard traffic and incident information while adding PennDOT plow-truck locations, winter roadway conditions, and other services.
511PA is also available in an app for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 511, or by following regional Twitter alerts.
