Firefighter injured battling Pittsburgh house fire; pet dog rescued

Three occupants escaped safely, but a firefighter was injured early Wednesday as crews battled a house fire in Pittsburgh’s Morningside neighborhood.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, which was reported at about 1:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Duffield Street.

City fire officials told TribLive news partner WTAE a firefighter suffered a leg injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Battalion Chief Ed Farley said flames at one point were shooting 8 to 10 feet from the front porch. He said fire crews created a ventilation hole in the home’s roof and were able to rescue a pet dog from inside.

The dog revived when it was given oxygen and was taken to a veterinarian, WTAE reported.

The house was heavily damaged, but crews contained the blaze and kept flames from spreading to closely spaced neighboring homes.

Water line break prompts remote learning at Chartiers Valley

A water line break disrupted classes for some students Tuesday at Chartiers Valley School District and resulted in remote instruction for all students in the district on Wednesday.

District officials posted on social media Tuesday morning that a break in a main had shut off all water service to the Primary School, prompting early dismissal for students in first and second grades.

Late Tuesday night, a second post announced that the water line broke once more after service had been restored.

District officials said all schools would be closed, with students participating in remote learning from their homes on Wednesday.
